Two main reasons to sweep any chimney are to reduce the occurrence of chimney fires, and to ensure that dangerous flue gases emitted from your appliance, exit safely out of the property.
HETAS and Sweep Safe recommend you should have your chimney swept by a professional chimney sweep at least once a year. If you are a heavy user then you may need an interim sweep, thatched properties may also require an interim sweep. Sweeping frequency should always be conducted to align with the conditions of your home insurance policy.
If you haven’t used your fire in some time you MUST have it swept before you do so. If it is blocked or partially blocked, smoke and other emissions (including deadly fumes like carbon monoxide) may not be able to escape properly up the chimney and they could come back into the room. Deaths through carbon monoxide poisoning have been well documented in the press.
