Reason to sweep

The primary reason for the sweeping of chimneys is to remove flammable creosote to aid in the prevention of chimney fires. Regular cleaning will remove soot and creosote, helping prevent dangerous chimney fires. Cleaning will increase the efficiency of some appliances

The secondary reason for sweeping of flues are to ensure a clear passage way which the toxic exhaust gasses can escape through. Deaths through carbon monoxide poisoning have been well documented in the press and a major cause is a blocked flue way.

Strange as it may seem you can actually have more build up in the chimney from fewer fires as a cold flue increases the deposits in the liner. A regularly used chimney never fully cools down so the gasses exit quicker reducing deposit build up in the liner.  It is not uncommon to see more deposits in a flue that has had 10 fires as a flue with 100 fires.
