The secondary reason for sweeping of flues are to ensure a clear passage way which the toxic exhaust gasses can escape through. Deaths through carbon monoxide poisoning have been well documented in the press and a major cause is a blocked flue way.
Strange as it may seem you can actually have more build up in the chimney from fewer fires as a cold flue increases the deposits in the liner. A regularly used chimney never fully cools down so the gasses exit quicker reducing deposit build up in the liner. It is not uncommon to see more deposits in a flue that has had 10 fires as a flue with 100 fires.
